Unveiling the TAE40122: Your Guide to the Latest Training and Assessment Qualification

The TAE40122 was released on the 7th December 2022 with a 2 year teach out. Some RTO’s rushed to implement the new qualification but here at Skills Strategies International we continued to deliver the TAE40116. The reasons were that it was deemed equivalent to the 22, it was less units for candidates to complete. In today’s trainer shortage that meant people could start training quicker … and it was funded by the state, so it was cheaper.
However there has been a change. Jobs and Skills is now funding the TAE40122, and we have the course ready to go. While the new course is longer, we believe it better prepares trainers and assessors to work in 2023 and beyond.

The TAE40116 consists of 10 units of competency, whereas the new TAE40122 requires the completion of 12 units of competency. In the TAE40116, there are 9 compulsory units to complete and 1 elective unit which can be chosen by you, the student or can be offered as part of a standard course offered by your provider. Most providers offer a standard course. The TAE40122 by comparison has 12 units of competency. The dreaded Design and Develop Assessment Tools (TAEASS502) is no longer a core unit and there are several relevant electives for candidates to choose. There are 6 core units and 6 elective units. So there are many more options for learners to learn a range of skills. Throughout the qualification there seems to be a bigger emphasis on meeting learner needs with a focus on customisation, contextualisation and the development of foundation skills. There are units in classroom-based delivery, online delivery, work-based delivery and delivering to young learners.

While it is difficult to allow all learners to have the options they desire, at SSI we have analysed our target groups and are offering 3 options for electives. Learners will complete a “generic” set of 10 units and complete the options in online learning, young learners and employability skills and imported electives from other qualifications. The electives will be delivered flexibly and will also be available for learners who are looking for some PD to improve their skills to join. Learners will be able to either do the assessments and achieve the units of competency or join the course as PD and gain a micro credential.

While it is not necessary to upgrade to the TAE40122, there is new learning that will benefit all trainers and assessors and it would be a shame for this not to be available.
The new qualification and the PD sessions will be delivered by Skills Strategies International over the next couple of months. It will be delivered in similar strategies to previously delivered with the 16; classroom based, virtual and intensive.

10 Key Steps in Delivering Learning to Youth BSB40120

At Skills Strategies we work extensively with VET in Schools programs. We have also been involved in an exciting project in the Middle East training trainers how to work with refugee youth. I was recently asked for a set of maxims to support delivering learning to young people. The list below is a start……..

Understand the emotive, cognitive, social and physical development of young people and use this information in the creation of curriculum and learning activities.
Behaviour management can be challenging. Authoritarian management generally doesn’t work. Be collaborative and focus on developing a community and engaging the learners in the decision making.
Recognise the skills that they have learned in living eg leadership skills, survival skills and develop the skills they need to function as adults. Ensure they can see the relevance.
Understand the cultural requirements at this stage of their lives. Understand their beliefs and values. Ask them what they believe and value and show understanding and respect. Build rapport and demonstrate an understanding of their needs.
Curriculum should be developed to address their needs at this age. Eg Risk taking can be an accepted part of young people’s lives. Teach decision making around risk taking.
Negotiate the curriculum. Many young people don’t like to be “told”.
Importance of peers. Use collaborative learning strategies: Collaborative learning involves working in groups to solve problems or complete tasks. This approach promotes teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. They will first need to be taught how to work in groups. Group leaders and importance of everyone participating.
Utilise active learning to keep them engaged. This can include group discussions, problem-solving activities, and hands-on projects. Encourage the development of critical thinking and problem solving.
Utilise delivery modes that are engaging for young people eg technology and mobile phones
Use project-based learning. Develop activities where they can engage in relevant content and make their own decisions eg running their own businesses.

Evolve Your Business, Enhance Your Leadership.

Skills Strategies International have been invited to present an article for an international journal on an adult education concept that we are trailing to increase learning relevance for industry. This work has been based on several business-to-business projects we have delivered. The projects have been working with a specific organisation and have been focussed on improving the business performance and developing leadership skills.The mode of delivery deviates from the traditional facilitator directed strategy. It is focussed around sensemaking and constructivism.

This work has led us to review the delivery of BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning)so the qualification focus is on business improvement in the learning organisation (Such as an RTO) as well as the individual leadership development.

There is an obvious interrelationship between business transformation and leadership what we are doing is changing our purpose. In traditional vocational education and training we have delivered a series of units to individuals to provide them a qualification. We have had plenty of feedback from industry that this does not suit their needs. It might provide a more highly qualified staff member who knows more and can do more. but the business isn’t substantially impacted.

Our purpose in our business-to-business delivery of leadership and management is to improve the business performance. We achieve that by focusing or organisational development first and then developing the leadership skills to support the organisational development.

The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) has all the subjects (units) aligned to business transformation. And like most vocational education units there is a requirement for implementation of the new knowledge and skills. It is a subtle change in the order of deliverythat will support our newfocus.

Innovative Aged Care Delivery

Skills Strategies International and Coolibah Care in Mandurah have embarked on a joint venture aimed at improving the skilling of aged care staff. The project will use an intensive coaching model to deliver the CHC33015 – Certificate III in Individual Support. The delivery will be on the job at Coolibah Care with the theory delivered in their training room.

The pilot program will be with four lucky students who will work with the Skills Strategies International (SSI) clinical supervisor. The mode of delivery will mean that learners will be able to be view appropriate practice, complete activities on the job and be able to work with real clients and conditions from the commencement of the course. Students will attend the facility two days per week and have one day per week to work on assessments. Because it is not full-time students will be able to maintain part-time work while they are studying.

The structure of the course is two weeks theory focus on the delivery of the units:

HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care

HLTINF001 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures

CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically

These units will be delivered in the context of the facility and will use their policies and procedures to provide absolute relevance. Coolibah will also provide their regular workplace induction so the learners will be part of the workplace team.

The units delivered on the job will include:

CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs

HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems

CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people

CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health and community services

Janette Robinson will be the trainer and clinical supervisor who will support the learners on the job and guide them through their learning. She has extensive experience working in aged care and delivering learning in this model.

The benefits of this program to learners will be the relevance associated with being based in the facility. There will also be less written assessment and more observation assessment. We expect that direct instruction will ensure skills uptake is more effective and efficient than being in a classroom.

Strategies for Success

Skills Strategies International utilises Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques to evaluate the basic dynamics between the thinking processes we employ (Neuro), the words we use (Linguistic) and how their interaction affects our behaviour (Programming). The future workplace

When we look back 10 years, even 5 years and see the changes that have happened in terms of technology in both our personal and work lives, and how this is impacting on our structures and social relationships we can only imagine what the next 5 years will bring. Artificial intelligence and virtual reality are here…….. growth is happening exponentially! As a result of all the change I believe people are living with more fear and anxiety. One of the ways we could deal with the fear is to take the bull by the horns and anticipate the changes and plan how we choose to deal with it. (the other options don’t bear thinking about).

So let’s think it through; what sort of skills do people need to thrive today and in the future ?

They need to be able to deal with and ever increasing abundance of contacts. We hear people talking about 3, 4 and 5 hundred emails per day. And then there is social media and telephone contacts. It takes a lot of skill to manage and filter these contacts……not to mention time.

Situations change in a heartbeat so it is important not to treat any situation as too permanent. The one constant is change and we need to be mentally prepared to move with it. It won’t work to be a rigid branch on the tree, we need to supple and bend in the wind.

We may have many contacts, and thousands of friends on facebook but you can’t hold a thousand hands at once. Do we have permanent and close social relationships with people who can shelter us from the storms. The family which was traditionally our backbone of support seems to be on the decline …….maybe to replaced by our Facebook page. (I have an ex student who shares her life on Facebook and asks her Facebook friends for advice from everything from childrearing to who to vote for.

The sociologist, Emile Durkeim (1858-1917) noticed the breakdown in moral behaviour in society that he believed resulted from the specialised division of labour in industrial society. He believed there was a breakdown in the collective consciousness that resulted from a lack of common belief. One can only wonder what he would think today. Definitely we can ask the question about what it does to our social structures when our life with our online, virtual friends takes precedence over the people we see and touch and support in our real worlds, As educators how do we prepare our young people for the workplace of the future. Even when we are delivering learning to the personnel in an organisation we need to consider what skills we are going to deliver that are going to continue to be relevant in 5 years.

Skills for 21st Century learning have been around or a while. Learning to learn, critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning, analysis, research skills, collaboration, interrogative questioning, oral and written communication, entrepreneurism, health and wellness literacy, technology skills, agility and adaptability, and the list goes on. Even before we had worked out how we were going to implement these skills we had a new framework, STEM.

BUT how are we implementing these skills in our learning programs. One structure that still seems to be still imbedded in the Industrial Revolution is our education (I include schools, VET and universities) system.

In the VET systems we have regulated institutions which must abide by a set of rules for operation. One of the rules is around the use of Training Packages which are standards apparently endorsed by industry and aligned to job positions. These training packages are updated approximately every 5 years – a very long time!! The content in the training packages is quote specific and rigid and doesn’t meet the requirements of many learners or industries. While it is a competency based system, delivery must meet indicated volume of learning requirements. Delivery can be flexible but state funding structures are aligned to state based organisations who deliver set hours and times. There is a push to include quality in the system but quality seems to equate to more time in the classroom.
